An assay is a test that determines the precious-metal content of an object, and the question is as old as coinage itself. Ancient traders dragged suspect gold across a touchstone and read the streak; medieval mints refined the art of cupellation, cooking samples in bone-ash vessels until base metals burned away and a bead of pure precious metal remained to be weighed. Every mint that ever mattered kept assayers the way courts keep judges.
The classical fire assay survives to this day as the reference method for gold: a precisely weighed sample is fused, the metals separated, and the pure gold weighed against the original, accurate to parts in ten thousand. It is destructive, slow, and definitive, which is why refineries still trust it for final settlement while everything else in the toolkit exists to avoid needing it.
Modern verification works without harming the object: X-ray fluorescence analyzers read surface composition in seconds; ultrasonic testing checks that the interior matches the exterior; precision measurement of weight and dimensions exposes anything pretending to a density it does not have, because almost nothing on earth imitates gold’s heft convincingly. Together they let dealers and mints verify constantly without ever lighting a furnace.
Many modern bars ship sealed in assay cards: tamper-evident packaging carrying weight, purity, and serial number under the refiner’s certification. For coins, the sovereign mint’s published standards do the same work, and third-party grading holders add an authentication layer on top, the reason certification matters so much for famous error dates with known counterfeit problems. Even the buildings agree: the Carson City Mint spent its later federal life as, precisely, an assay office.
