How Bullion Premiums Work

Why physical coins always cost more than the spot price, what drives premiums up and down, and how to think about them as a collector.

Market Insights

The gap between the spot price and the price of a coin in your hand has a name, an anatomy, and a logic. Premiums are not padding; they are the itemized bill for turning a 400-ounce bar in a London vault into a one-ounce coin at your door.

The anatomy of a premium

Stack the layers and the mystery dissolves. Fabrication: refining, blanking, striking, and quality control at the mint. Distribution: the wholesale network that moves product across the country. Dealer service: authentication, inventory carrying cost, insurance, secure shipping, and a human being accountable to you. Demand: the market’s appetite for that specific product, this specific week. Every premium you will ever see is those four layers in different proportions.

Why premiums differ product to product

A plain silver bar carries the thinnest stack; a government coin adds sovereign minting and worldwide recognition; a famous design adds collector demand; and a numismatic coin adds the entire second universe of rarity and condition. Same metal, different amounts of work and want layered on top: the bars, rounds, and coins ladder in action.

Premiums move on their own

Here is the part that surprises newcomers: premiums have their own weather, partly independent of spot. When physical demand surges, as the market documented dramatically in 2020 and 2021, mints run flat out, supply chains strain, and premiums on popular coins can widen sharply even while spot itself wobbles. When demand cools, premiums compress. A complete price is always two stories: where spot sits, and what the physical market is doing on top of it.

The two-sided view

Premiums exist on the buyback side too, expressed through the bid. Popular, easily verified products tend to command the strongest two-way markets, which is a genuine, practical reason recognizable coins have earned their following beyond beauty alone.

Framed once, useful forever: premium = fabrication + distribution + dealer service + demand. Spot is the metal; the premium is everything it took to become the thing you actually wanted.
